March 25 CART race under review

DETROIT -- The CART race scheduled March 25 in Rio de Janeiro has been put on hold while that Brazilian city examines contractual commitments for this year, the American-based sanctioning body said Monday.

A new administration in Brazil's second-largest city has placed all existing city contracts under review.

"CART recognizes the importance of this event to the economy of the city and Brazil itself," said CART president Joseph Heitzler. "It has a huge following throughout South America, and we do not wish even a momentary interruption in our long-term relationship with this important market for us."

Heitzler did not say when a decision might be made on the status of the event, the second of 22 races on the schedule.

"While March 25 is fast approaching, we are committed to doing all we can to keep the Rio race on the schedule for our fans," he said.

Brazilian native Emerson Fittipaldi, a former CART and Formula One champion, is the promoter of the Rio race.
